Solis is A Multicultural Mental Health Professional and Peer Community of Practice

Members and growing

A capacity-building, support & resource network for culture-oriented, multicultural mental health advocates & practitioners.

Solis is a community of practice that brings together a group of interdisciplinary multicultural mental health advocates and professionals – who occupy positions “both inside and outside the community.”

As the Professional and Peer arm of the Australia Institute for Diversity in Mental Health (AIDMH), Solis focuses on supporting the specific practice, professional development and uplifting of multicultural mental health practitioners and advocates, and their work, which in turn feeds back into our outward facing work and the mental health sector.

By creating an intentional, safe and supported avenue that allows for transparent conversation and understanding, Solis contributes to the aims of AIDMH in various ways including in starting to reduce the silos (Ie. the opposite of Solis!) and work toward a more efficient and meaningful use of limited resources.

In particular, Solis focuses on creating opportunities for capacity-building, as well as emotional and practical support for multicultural practitioners to continue contributing meaningfully and sustainably within the broader mental health sector.

Our Role & Purpose

By creating an intentional, safe-enough and supported avenue that allows for transparent conversation and understanding, Solis contributes to the system in various ways – including in starting to reduce the silos (Ie. the opposite of Solis!) and work toward a more efficient and meaningful use of limited resources within the multicultural mental health sector.

In particular, Solis focuses on creating opportunities for capacity-building – as well as emotional and practical supports – for multicultural practitioners and advocates to continue contributing meaningfully and sustainably within the mental health sector. This includes providing unbiased collective access to resources, knowledge, wisdom and cross-disciplinary networks.

We hold our collective lived and living experiences – as well as our seasoned Lived Expertise – warmly and with respect, understanding and being underpinned by the principles and tasks of the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) Framework.

About Us

Who we are

We are a community of practice that brings together a group of interdisciplinary multicultural mental health advocates and professionals – who hold positions “both inside and outside the community.”

What we believe in

We believe our wisdom and skills deserve to be valued and paid for – but we don’t believe the people we’re here to support should be the ones carrying that cost. Instead we leverage power structures within community to build and maintain relational trust.

We walk alongside those that believe in human-rights and social-justice aligned values and principles, but also those who are willing to be brave enough to reflect on how proximal they are to dominant systems and structures – and what they can do to move toward meaningful, foundational connections that break these down. We move at the speed of trust.

How we navigate complexity

We are led by a Think Tank that guides and contributes to the activities of diversity and intersectionality in mental health – both internally and in relation to the wider sector. This allows us to provide nuanced expertise around policies, issues, or ideas that increase cultural humility and sectoral cultural responsiveness.

With so many commitments competing for your time, maybe you’re reluctant to add to your plate. Perhaps you’ve been here before. Your heart is in the right place, but you’ve taken on too much and burnt out.

We’re with you. We’ve been there, too, and because of this, we’d like Solis to be different.

We know that life happens and sometimes we say yes, only for our circumstances to change. Just let us know, we’re right there with you. We’re all volunteering our time and energy in this space and sometimes need to hit pause to protect our own well-being. Moreover, we believe that your well-being comes before anything else – after all, we can never give from an empty cup.

With that in mind, there are many ways you can be involved, with each requiring a different time commitment. We’re flexible and happy to be led with what works best for you!
